How does code work?

Ask a parent or carer if you can make your own Scratch account, if they give you permission, make an account by clicking here

This week we will be focussing more on the scripts which makes games work.

Have a go at playing this game. Have a think about what instructions you think that the cat ‘sprite’ may have been given.

Have a look at the cat scripts on this presentation. The code on the left is the correct script that the game uses. What do you think would happen if there was no forever block? What difference would it make to the program?

Click back on the game and click ‘see inside’. Look at how the code has the forever block. Now, remove the forever block and click the green flag to run the code again. What has happened?

Now put the forever block back so that the game isn’t broken anymore- could you do that? Have a look at the slides to help you.

Now look at the mouse scripts on the slides. Go back on the game and change the numbers in the green block to 0. Click the green flag at the top of the script- what has happened?

Now if you look closely at this part of the screen,

you will see the scratch co-ordinates. (0,0) is the middle of the screen and the x axis goes from -240 to 240 and the y axis goes from -180 to 180. If you put your mouse on the stage area it will tell you the coordinates.

Now have a go at ‘debugging’ this program. There are 5 things that don’t work properly.

Run the program and see what strange or unusual things they are doing and then try to fix them, using the prompts on the PowerPoint to help.

This week in geography, we would like you to design a fantasy island. You could base it on the island map from Michael Moorpurgo's Kensuke's Kingdom. What would it look like? Include a key and the compass points. Watch the LESSON STARTER and play the Fantasy Maps POWERPOINT to help you and for more information.

CLICK HERE to learn how to use a compass and read maps.

Also play the Compass Points POWERPOINT to help undstand compass points and complete the blank compass GRID that has been uploaded. There is a quick game uploaded to play called Compass Directions GAME.

Continue to use this board to share where you have been in the world. Were you on holiday there? Visiting family? Perhaps you could share a photograph of your favourite memory from there. Please remember to put your name, and your reason for being there.

Can you find where the teachers have been? Post a comment or ask a question to show you have found our 'pins'.

Well Being

We are really enjoying how you are using this board to share what they are doing and how they are feeling. Your kind messages to other members of Y5/6 and positive thoughts are wonderful to read. smiley

We hope you have a great week. Keep safe, and keep smiling.
